A sweet treat
We have all been there, when you've got the naughty munchies and only a sweet treat will do.
You drag yourself off the sofa and rifle through the kitchen cupboards only to be sorely disappointed when hopefully stumbling upon a packet of Ryvita's - so cruelly mistaken for something.. edible.
So what do you do?
Trek to the nearest shop begrudgingly, knowing you will go over your food budget buying treats and temptations?
Well don't - you raid that cupboard, not for sad looking rice cakes forgotten from January's diet; but for a few ingredients that can cook up beautiful bits in next to no time.
For us this chilly September evening, only one thing would do - cinnamon buns!
Now, as much as a love a 90 minute rise on a beautifully bouncy yeasted dough, when a girls got to eat, shes got to eat.
So here is a cheats treat made from just a few store cupboard ingredients, all in under half an hour.
Cheat, Treat, Cinnamon Buns - makes 8
Dough
250g self-raising flour 8p
20g caster sugar / granulated 2p
25g melted butter 13p
120ml semi-skimmed milk 13p
1tsp ground cinnamon 10p
Total cost for dough 46p
Filling
1tsp ground cinnamon 10p
10g caster sugar (brown sugar is ideal, but don't worry if you don't have it) 1p
1tbsp melted butter 6p
Total cost for filling 17p
Icing
2tbsp icing sugar
1tsp cold water
Total cost for icing 4p
TOTAL COST FOR 8 BUNS :- 67p
It's as simple as mixing all your dough ingredients together, to form a pastry like dough, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle or as near as.
Mix together your filling ingredients and once they form a loose paste, slather this onto your rolled out dough.
Begin rolling up your dough, long ways, upwards, tightly, like a big snake, or a swiss roll if you prefer a less phallic image!
Cut into 5cm or so thick pieces and place into a greased, deep baking tray, placing each bun tightly next to its neighbour - this is so that when they cook, they will have deliciously soft edges having been baked in close proximity.
Stir your icing sugar and water together to form a reasonably runny consistency, but thick enough that it wont disappear.
Bake your buns at 180c for 12-15 minutes, until they're browned ontop but soft to the touch.
Let them cool and then pour a generous amount of your icing sugar mix over the top of them.
Eaten as an after dinner snack - as we have just done - or even better the next day for breakfast and a good, hot cup of coffee!
With each bun costing 8p.
When you could quite easily pop into your local coffee shop and grab a cinnamon bun for over £1, why not give these sweet treats a go at home?
